Template:Cite web

This template is used when making a citation of a webpage, for which there isn't a more specific citation template.

Usage

Web citations require, at a minimum, a url and title. Ideally you should also supply information about the author and date the content was written, if that information is available, and the date that you accessed the page (in YYYY-MM-DD format), in case it gets changed later on.

Author attribution

If the author published their work under their real name, and their real name is composed of distinct first and last names, provide their name as separate fields.

If published under a username, pseudonym, their name is a mononym, or there are multiple credited authors, use the author parameter instead.

If the work is published on behalf of a collective synonymous with the website (such as a convention's committee), no author attribution is necessary.

Website attribution

If necessary, you can credit the work that the citation derives from in addition to the author. This should be the name of the website, blog, or publication that you're citing. This can optionally be wikilinked.

Attributing the website itself is usually only useful if your citation is for a specific, self-contained piece of content, such as an article. It may be omitted otherwise.

Quotes

You can quote a short section of the article using the quote parameter. This will be appended to the end of the citation wrapped in quotation marks.

Keep this part brief, to a sentence or less if you can.

Archive links

Webpages are impermanent and tend to move or disappear over time. When referencing a page that no longer exists, try to find it on an archive service (such as the Wayback Machine) instead.

When referencing an archived page, provide the URL to the archived version of the page, along with the date that the archive was made in YYYY-MM-DD format.

Non-HTML formats

If the referenced work is not an HTML page, but still a document hosted online, provide the document format as a parameter.
